Common questions

Why does the app need to download such large models?

The models that transcribe your voice, detect who's speaking, and separate overlapping voices are ML models that Apple, Google, and OpenAI have released for on-device use. They range from ~200 MB (Fast tier) to ~1.4 GB (Accurate tier). Once downloaded they run entirely offline. You never have to download them again unless you switch tiers.

Does Transcriptinator use my microphone in the background?

Only when you tap Record. The system-level microphone indicator (orange dot in the status bar) is on any time we're recording, and background audio is allowed only so a recording started manually can continue running when you switch apps. We do not listen in idle.

Where are my recordings stored?

Locally on your iPhone in the app's private data directory. iCloud sync is not currently supported. Delete a recording in the app and both the audio file and its transcript are removed.

Can I use Transcriptinator for legal, medical, or journalistic recordings?

The app is designed with confidentiality in mind — audio never leaves your device unless you explicitly enable an AI provider, and even then only the text transcript is sent, never the audio. However, laws about recording conversations vary by jurisdiction. You are responsible for ensuring you have the necessary consent before recording anyone.

What if the transcript is wrong?

Whisper is very good but not perfect. The Accurate tier (Whisper Medium) produces the best results. Speaker matching improves over time as the app folds new samples into your voice profile. You can also correct speaker assignments by tapping the speaker chip on any segment.

Do you offer refunds?

The app itself is free. Refunds for any paid features would be handled through the App Store; contact Apple directly at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Reporting bugs

When reporting a bug, please tell us:

  1. What you expected to happen
  2. What actually happened
  3. The exact steps to reproduce it
  4. Whether it happens every time or intermittently

If the app crashed, please open Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data and search for "Transcriptinator." Attach any matching crash log to your email.
